Why We Started Perennial Edge
We started Perennial Edge to help families make better, more impactful financial decisions for themselves and those they care about.
Whether it’s talking about blindspots, like holding too much in company stock, or opportunities, like avoiding capital gains tax with a family gifting strategy, our team is focused on providing massive value every step of the way.
Meet The Team
I am an avid gardener, a trait I inherited from my Sicilian grandfather. Herb, cucumber, spinach, lettuce, and tomato varietals fill the yard each Summer. Get me talking about growing tomatoes and the conversation might never end. The garden is a special place for my two young daughters and me. We chase each other around the eggplants, search for cucumbers and beans to eat off the vine, dig for worms, and pluck tomatoes just as they show a tint of ripeness. I also like to fish (salt and freshwater, spin or fly). And to complete the circle, I really love to cook. There’s something magical and fulfilling about consuming a tomato harvested or fish caught that same day. My ginger bluefish, grilled pizza, and seared tuna with side aioli recipes count among my friends and family’s favorites.
My path to financial advisory can be traced back to one New York City morning in March 2001 when I woke up with a sense of clarity, realizing two things. I wanted to live in Boston, close to my family and friends, and I wanted a career focused on helping everyday people versus the institutions that I serviced in my Commercial Mortgage-backed Securities job at Goldman Sachs. That same NYC day, I submitted my resignation letter, and never looked back. But before I returned to Boston, I drove to California and back, visiting as many ballparks as possible. Chicago’s Wrigley Field, Colorado’s Coors Field, and La Jolla, California house some of my fondest memories. Not making it to PNC Park, which had just opened in the great city of Pittsburgh, and missing Hideo Nomo’s Red Sox no-hitter at Camden Yards by one day are a couple of my few regrets. At the end of the trip, I knew starting my own financial planning practice was my next step. I always enjoyed the conversations with friends and family about navigating the complex career, investing, and financial independence decisions that awaited them. I also wanted to learn more about how I could maximize my impact on their (and my own) financial and life decisions.
As my practice grew, I wanted to better understand some of the different situations and challenges a couple or family might encounter, so I obtained my CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER (CFP®) designation. This involved a lot of case study work on unique situations and the many different avenues to help one solve a financial planning problem. Much of the training during this multi-year certification process is helpful in recognizing the blindspots and opportunities while working with high income professionals. I love the unique problems and opportunities that these professionals bring to the table, such as deferring gains on a real estate sale, employing a tax-advantaged gifting program for one’s children, or using a SoloK to drastically reduce income.
While I don’t talk much about “Haavaahhd,” I am proud that I graduated with an Economics degree and was a walk-on, starting catcher for the university’s baseball team. There’s a few funny Fenway Park “wall ball” stories that go along with my college baseball years. Feel free to ask me about them. My coach at Harvard, the late Joe Walsh, a great friend and confidant, would often joke: “Thank God you attended Harvard when you did because you would never get in today,” as I laughed and nodded my head in agreement. Coaches were always looked up to in my family. My dad was a long-time high school basketball coach in Belmont and Burlington. I enjoy being around and part of a team, whether professionally or personally so I coach my children’s teams as much as possible. On weekends, you’re sure to find me on a court, field, or diamond.
My wife Valerie and I are active in raising funds and awareness for any non-profit dedicated to improving the health and mortality of babies. This is done in memory of our son Mason whom we lost in 2013. “You never get over it. You just get through it,” is some of the best advice I have ever received. Our entire family loves to get their hands dirty in Burlington’s People Helping People food bank garden and supports any cause that promotes access to quality, fresh foods. We live in Winchester with our two beautiful, happy daughters. When not at the office, I love to golf, over-researching the quickest way to shoot par, and play paddle, a more robust form of pickleball.
Now you know about me. I look forward to finding out more about you and your hobbies, career, and family.

I began my career in financial services shortly after graduating from Assumption College on a ROTC Scholarship. My original plan was to serve my country post-college, yet I suffered an injury while training in the US Marine Corps Reserves. My back injury prevented me from serving on active duty, so I was faced with the challenge of figuring out what I wanted to do for a career. It was 1989 and a friend pointed me towards Fidelity Investments. I spent 30 years at Fidelity, working in multiple client-facing roles, eventually serving as the Westwood Office’s Branch Leader, responsible for managing teams of Financial Planners. While at Fidelity, I attended Boston College part time and received an MS in Finance. This program provided me with great insight into the world of finance, both corporate and personal.
In 2021, after reaching my goals at Fidelity, I left and pursued some more client-facing financial planning roles and eventually made my way to Perennial Edge. In my current role as Advisor & Operations Manager, I have my hand in many areas of the firm…human resources, client money movement, trading, and financial advising. All my responsibilities are aimed at improving the client experience and providing massive, proactive value to the households we serve. Being able to significantly impact people’s lives is very rewarding.
Outside of work, I am passionate about history, probably because I am the youngest of six children born to amazing parents who were part of the “Greatest Generation.” My mother was born in Galway, Ireland, so I enjoy dual citizenship. My father served in the Marines during World War II, fighting in the battle of Okinawa, where his younger brother was killed. A Marine Corps League in my hometown (Watertown, MA) is named after my uncle. The Private Charles J Shutt Detachment in Watertown helps active-duty service members and veterans enjoy the camaderie, fellowship, and traditions of the Marine Corps and is an organization I passionately support.
I live in Reading MA with my wife Kristen. We met while working at Fidelity and have two adult children. Our daughter Ashley is a recent Fairfield University grad and is a middle school teacher in Philadelphia. Our son Joey is at Marist College, currently studying in Tokyo, Japan. We have a golden retriever named Mickey who keeps us busy. I also enjoy golf, family travel (Italy was my most recent and favorite trip), and reading about significant moments in history and the biographies of those involved. I am an avid college football fan and have made trips to visit several major college stadiums.

My “Happy” Meal: Capital Grille Steak with an IPA chaser
I grew up in Bridgewater, Massachusetts, with my three sisters and a family dog that my father brought home for some much-needed male companionship! I attended Boston College joining a long line of BC Eagles that includes my father, uncle, aunt, cousin, and sister. My original plan was to go on to medical school after graduation but instead I began a career in business—a smart move considering I’m not a fan of blood!
Over the years, I’ve had the opportunity to work for Thomson Reuters, Nasdaq, and most recently, Forrester. My career path gave me a real interest in financial markets and investing. In my current role as a Client Service Manager, I support clients with money movement tasks, online account access, new accounts, IRA funding, and a range of other needs.
Outside of work, I stay active by playing in a fast-paced, co-ed indoor soccer league every Friday night. Somewhat recently, I got into cooking and baking, and now I love experimenting with new recipes to share with my family. (Ask me about my amazing beef stew recipe.) I am also an avid skier, enjoy a good game of chess (even if I lose), and love cheering on my daughter at her varsity soccer games for Arlington High School. Until recently, I was also an avid gardener, but I couldn’t keep up with the rabbits and insects and am taking a break. I currently live in Arlington with my husband, our two kids, and our two overly pampered cats.
Favorite place: Falmouth, Massachusetts.
Favorite international locale: Chania on the island of Crete.
Favorite Cuisine: Anything with a sauce but mostly North Indian cuisine.
I grew up in Needville, Texas, which is about as small as it sounds. After high school, I did a complete 180, attending New York University and making the Big Apple my home for over six years. I received my B.A. in Psychology and spent time during college working with medically fragile children and victims of homelessness. Ultimately, I landed in Boston, earned my law degree from New England Law and practiced civil law with some incredible attorneys during my next 13 years.
A couple years after Dennis and I met, I called him for advice on my work 401K. A few years later, he finally got the hint, and the rest is history. These days, our two amazing daughters keep me busy, and I am grateful to be home with them during their formative years. Currently, I am very active in the parent association at their elementary school, along with balancing the needs of their local Girl Scout troops. This year, I am stepping up to help run the school’s student-led Green Team, guiding young kids on ways to contribute and be kind to our environment.
As our daughters got older, I wanted to continue to be a strong role model and have a positive professional impact on people, beyond my previous role as an attorney. When Dennis mentioned helping the family business, I jumped in with both feet. In my current role, I help clients with money movement tasks, online account access, and managing our Surprise and Delight program. Feel free to ask me about working with my spouse as we strive to be the most thoughtful, curious, and caring financial planning firm for our clients and friends.

In the Community
We are passionate about our work with the local People Helping People food pantry garden and our volunteer chores, such as planting potatoes, de-weeding the beds, and churning the compost. The garden produces over 2 tons of fresh vegetables each year.
Feel free to join us on our next garden volunteering day. There is always one on the schedule. Our next one is scheduled for October 23, 2024.
